History of cars : Car lover new car review 2008

History of cars
by Robert Baird

Automobiles were a much later innovation and in the ancient times it used to be the domestic animals who were popularly used for commuting. Here it is necessary to point out the origin of the term automobile. The term 'automobile' derived its meaning from the Greek root 'auto' meaning 'self' and the Latin word 'mobilis' meaning 'movement' and therefore the term came to designate that it was a vehicle that did not require the aid of any other animal or vehicle for its movement and could be driven by itself. An automobile may also be referred to as a motor car which refers to a vehicle which runs by the functioning of its own motor.
It is quite interesting to note that there is a bit of dispute regarding the first vehicles that ever strode on the surface of the earth. While some credit Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot for attaining this amazing feat around the1770s by designing the very first self-driven mechanical three-wheeler vehicle, it is held by some others that it was Ferdinand Verbiest who around 1672 had built the first ever steam powered vehicle. However, in both cases the common link is the renowned Swiss inventor named Francois Isaac de Rivaz who was responsible for combining the resources of hydrogen and oxygen to create the first internal combustion engine which was subsequently used for running the first vehicles on the earth's surface. However, it must be noted here that this creation was not quite successful and the 19th century witnessed a series of innovations in the art of creating the predecessor of the modern cars. It was in 1885 that Karl Benz manufactured a vehicle which functioned with the aid of an Otto gasoline engine and this design was sanctioned by the relevant authorities and it is Karl Benz who is popularly regarded as the inventor of the modern vehicle. In 1896, Benz conceptualized the first internal combustion flat engine. These vehicles were mostly three-wheelers and were extremely popular before the inception of the four-wheeler vehicles in the closing years of the 19 th century. Another very prominent automobile company in those times was founded by Daimler and Maybach named Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in the year 1890. In fact it was in 1890 that the first foundations of the automobile industry were laid in France by Armand Peugeot and Emile Levassor. In the United States of America , the first car with an in-built internal combustion engine was manufactured by George Selden in 1877.

Infiniti is a brand of luxury car produced by the Japanese automobile maker, Nissan Motor Company Ltd. It is a Japanese brand name sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Middle East and Taiwan. Its logo, the upward pointed triangle symbolizes Mt. Fuji, a mountain volcano highly revered in Japan. Infiniti is designed to compete with fellow Japanese automakers Toyota's Lexus and Honda's Acura, leading German competitors Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz, as well as the American Lincoln and Cadillac.
In the SUV category, it races with the specialists - Jeep and Land Rover. Nissan's famous Pathfinder was taken over by a modified and more luxurious Infinity QX4. It stays very close with competitors Lexus RX 300, Acura MDX and Mercedes-Benz ML320 in the luxury SUV market. The 2008 Infinity QX56 is full-sized luxury SUVs which has a 2WD and 4WD variants. It is powered by 5.6-liter V8 engine with 320 horsepower and 393 lb-ft torque.
Introduced in the United States in 1989, Infiniti aimed to produce and sell premium cars, a stride away from Nissan's mainstream reputation. It is by coincidence that Toyota and Honda also begun their bid during this time to establish their bid in the U.S. luxury car market with the introduction of Lexus and Acura, respectively.
Infiniti's introduction of a 278-horsepower V8 engined Q45, an all-wheel drive sedan that is equipped with an active suspension system - a breakthrough in automotive technology that controls vertical movement of the wheels with an onboard system. With this technology, movement is not solely determined by the surface or base wherein the wheel is running, and thus, eliminating body roll and pitch during corner turning, accelerating and braking. Active suspension achieves higher ride quality and handling, allowing the wheels to fit in the road for better grip and control. The Q45 earned the moniker "The Japanese Lincoln".
The M30 coupe, the so-called Americanized version of the Nissan Leopard, was Infiniti's bet to compete with the Acura Legend coupe. The G20 was produced with an eye to compete with the BMW 3-series. It was later replaced with the G35, which instantly became a hit as the Motor Trend Car of the Year for 2003. Infiniti G35 was nicknamed the "Japanese BMW." The 2008 model of the Infiniti G-series has a coupe (powered by 330 horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine) and a sedan variant (with 206 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine). Another V8-powered sedan entered as the Infinity M-series (the smaller M35 and the more powerful M45). A sporty 2008 Infiniti FX has three models available.
Infiniti is threading the path to the future of automobiles with a passion for a new breed of cars called Crossover Utility Vehicles (CUV). This new design marries the performance of a sedan and the flexibility of an SUV. Infiniti has placed the all-new Infiniti EX to pioneer in this category.
Company executives envisioned the weaning away Infiniti from Nissan's image. To stay in the race, their philosophy is to rely on the best design and the infinite opportunities available to compete. In their own words, "We will have our eyes fixed on BMW (the industry leader in luxury cars) this time."
Help Infiniti live its own name by dressing your keys with Infiniti Keychains, available in elegant metal designs engraved with the "Mt Fuji" logo and the name of your preferred automobile brand "INFINITY".

2008 Audi A8 : Car lover Audi new car review 2008

2008 Audi A8
by Fei Lim
In many parts of the world Audi is by far taking the lead from its top class competitors like Mercedes Benz and BMW. The 2008 Audi A8 is definitely in a different league and goes above any traditional luxury. This car has been upgraded from the A8 that was first brought out back in 1994. It was then the first car in the world to have been built on an aluminum platform, known as the Audi Space Frame (ASF). The A8 for 2008 has been updated to improve the suspension of the vehicle, the soundproofing, the steering as well as technology offering of the flagship model.
There are four different versions available in the Audi A8 model. It is available in A8, A8 L, A8 L W12 and then there is the S8. All of these models have the same chassis except for any of the "L" models as they have an extra 5-inch wheelbase, which results in passengers in the rear gaining extra room.
The Audi A8 and the A8 L are available in a V8 engine that is a luxury full size sedan. It comes standard with:
* Valcona leather seats
* dashboard inlays are both aluminum and wood
* front seats are heated and are power adjustable
* xenon headlamps
* voice controlled DVD navigation
Both models have electronic shock absorption control with air suspension, and they come standard with 18-inch alloy rims.
The Audi A8 L W12 is a 12-cylinder and has a 450-hp W12 engine and is only available with a long wheel base platform. This particular model comes standard with more luxury features:
* rear power seating
* side and rear power sunshades
* rear passenger control their temperature
* insulated glass in the doors for all doors which reduces any noise levels
This model has the same suspension design as the A8 as well as the A8 L but it comes standard with 19-inch alloy rims.
All these A8 models have been built with ASF. The use of the old steel chassis is now being replaced by the use of hybrid-welded laser-MIG aluminum. It is used for the castings, the panels and the profiles. With the car being built in aluminum, the Audi A8 model is now as much as several hundred pounds lighter than it would be if constructed in steel. By using the ASF the A8 has got a chassis more rigid than before, the vehicle handling is better, the crash performance has improved and to top it off the fuel economy is far better.
For the 2008 models there is a choice of three different engines. The Audi A8 and the A8 L both have a 4.2 liter V8 engine with 325 lb. Ft. of torque and 350 hp. The Audi A8 L W12 has a 6 liter W12 engine with 420 hp and 428 lb. Ft. of torque. All the Audi A8 models come standard with the Audi quattro's four wheel drive and include the automatic transmission which is a 6 speed Tiptronic that have both Sport Program and DSP features.
The Air Suspension is Audi's very own design and it balances the comfort of the ride with great sporty handling. This system uses air sprung struts that are controlled by electromagnetic valves that adjust each shock absorber. It is left up to the driver to either leave it in total automatic mode or he can select one of four suspension settings for different ride heights.
Technology of this vehicle
Audi has added "side assist". This is a system based on radar that monitors any blind spots and will let the driver know if there is any other traffic near.
The "lane assist" will let the driver know if the vehicle is moving from the lane without him realizing. The driver is warned by the steering wheel vibrating.
You can't go wrong with the entertainment system in the 2008 A8. It comes standard with a BOSE surround sound 12 speaker system with a satellite radio that is capable of WMA/MP3 playback. Or you can go for the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system that has a 6 disc CD changer.
Safety Features
Both driver and passenger are protected by front and knee air bags. There are air bags mounted on the sides for additional protection that are fitted both for front and rear passengers. There is Tethers and Lower Anchorage so the Children are safe, this feature is standard in the A8 model, and so is the monitoring system of the tire pressure. The vehicle also comes equipped with an anti-theft alarm system.
Price
The cost of the 2008 Audi A8 models range from $70,680 to $120,100.
The 2008 Audi A8 has safety, technology as well as class altogether in one package that makes this vehicle a very attractive model for this year.
